What is TOSCA?
Tutbury Old School Community Association (TOSCA) was formed on 1st July 2008 in response to Staffordshire County Council’s decision to sell its Youth and Community Centre (or Tutbury Old School) on Cornmill Lane in Tutbury. The aim of TOSCA ‘to preserve Tutbury Old School as a community facility’ was unanimously agreed. TOSCA became a registered charity in November 2008. TOSCA aims to acquire the building from Staffordshire County Council and then manage it as a community facility and home to Tutbury Scout Group, Tutbury Pre-school and Tutbury Youth Club. Who supports TOSCA?The following organisations were represented at TOSCA’s initial meeting Since the initial meeting, other local groups have been involved. These include Both Janet Dean MP and Andrew Griffiths (Conservative candidate) have also offered their support. Brief historyThe school on Cornmill Lane was established in 1862 by the Parish Charities when the school on Monk Street became too full. The building comprised a school and headmaster’s house. The land surrounding it formed the school yard and headmaster’s garden. In the 1960s the building was transferred to Staffordshire County Council, in exchange for the Burton Street school (now Richard Wakefield Primary School), so that the Parish Charities could continue to have a school on their land, as laid down by Richard Wakefield. The former headteacher’s house has been home to the 12th Burton, 1st Tutbury & Hatton Scout Group for many decades. Tutbury Preschool has run from the school building since 2003 and Tutbury Youth Club operates there two nights a week. The building has known nearly 150 years of education in Tutbury and provides a venue for crucial services for children and young people.
